Topic of the seminar is to jointly create knowledge on different global architectural cultures. \u201eWe have entered a period of a gradual Post-Westernization of knowledge and the coproduction of tran-national and non-hegemonic knowledge\u201c (Roulleau-Berger\/Yuzhao). Most categories of analysis in our field derive from Western experience and are nevertheless seen as universal. Die Zeit des Nationalsozialismus hat in Berlin als ehemaliger Reichshauptstadt zahlreiche Spuren hinterlassen. Solche Spuren werden wir an Geb\u00e4uden besichtigen, um zentralen Aspekten des NS-Systems nachzugehen und kritisch zu diskutieren: Was sind charakteristische Merkmale einer,,Nazi-Architektur\u201c? Wie ging man seit 1945 mit NS-Architektur um? WiSe 22\/23- Tangyang \u71d9\u6a23: Chinese Paper Models from Qing Dynasty<\/h4>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Topic of the seminar are paper models of mausoleums from Qing Dynasty China. We will be working hands-on with the models conserved in the Ethnological Museums in Berlin. Through documenting the models and by means of digital reproductions we will learn about their materiality and their specific way of representing volume and space. A city is made of buildings, which are repeatedly reconverted and readapted to new uses. Form persists, function changes. The seminar investigates architecture, which underwent categorical changes of functional type. How do inherited buildings enrich their new uses? This can happen thanks to the cultural significance, which the reused building accumulated through its former functions. In this course students will be introduced to the fascinating ancient traditions of wooden architecture throughout the East Asian cultural sphere. We will explore the historical development, diversity of wooden building typologies and highly sophisticated construction techniques such as Dougong bracket sets.
